Neurotoxin treatments — commonly known by brand names such as Botox®, Dysport®, or Xeomin® — are among the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures today. They’re quick, effective, and require minimal downtime. But what you do after your appointment plays an important role in achieving smooth, natural-looking results.

Below is a simple guide to neurotoxin aftercare that I share with my patients to help maximize outcomes and minimize side effects.

Why Aftercare Matters

Neurotoxins work by temporarily relaxing targeted facial muscles. In the hours immediately following treatment, the product is settling into the intended areas. Proper aftercare helps ensure the medication stays where it was placed and performs optimally.

Immediately After Treatment (First 4–6 Hours)

  • Stay upright: Avoid lying down or bending forward excessively.
  • Do not rub or massage treated areas: This prevents unwanted migration of the product.
  • Avoid hats or tight headwear: Pressure on injection sites can disrupt placement.
  • Gentle facial movement is okay: Normal expressions can help the product bind to receptors.

For the First 24 Hours

  • Skip strenuous exercise: Elevated blood flow may increase swelling or bruising.
  • Avoid heat exposure: Saunas, hot yoga, or steam rooms should wait until the next day.
  • Limit alcohol intake: Alcohol can contribute to bruising.
  • Pause certain skincare treatments: Hold off on facials, chemical peels, or microdermabrasion.

What’s Normal After Neurotoxin Injections

Patients may notice:

  • Small bumps at injection sites (typically resolve within 30 minutes)
  • Mild redness or swelling
  • Minor bruising
  • A slight headache

These effects are temporary. Results usually begin appearing within 3–5 days, with full effect visible by 10–14 days.

When to Contact Your Provider

While complications are uncommon, reach out if you experience:

  • Persistent swelling or pain
  • Vision changes
  • Difficulty swallowing or speaking
  • Eyelid drooping that concerns you

Your provider can assess and guide you appropriately.

Long-Term Tips for Best Results

  • Schedule follow-ups as recommended
  • Maintain consistent treatment intervals
  • Protect your skin with daily SPF
  • Pair neurotoxin treatments with a personalized skincare plan

A Personal Note

My philosophy as a provider is centered on subtle enhancement — helping patients look refreshed, confident, and authentically themselves. Education is a key part of that process. Understanding proper aftercare empowers you to protect your investment and enjoy the best possible outcome from your treatment.

If you have questions about neurotoxins or whether they’re right for you, consult a qualified medical professional who can evaluate your individual goals and health history.
